Local Business
When starting a local business there are many ways to succeed, even failing will push you even further ahead.

Being local has its many advantages and when starting out don’t try to be big and recognize what kind of industry you’re in.  Metropol Industries Incorporated owner Steve Webb says, “Anyone who does business on Vancouver Island. They do have an advantage and to say that you’re local. It’s pretty easy and a lot of our business comes from people that want to print on the Island. We are an Island owned operated business and we market that very heavily when talking to companies on the Island.”
Webb says, “When starting the business start small and pick something you enjoy. Try to play with the big guys. Keep up with the paperwork and Revenue Canada. And learn
to explain what you do very quickly. Be clear and concise.”

Being local you will feel the strain of online sellers, but there is advantages to being a business that runs a shop and the online companies do not have something you have. Webb says, “Every company has felt the impact of online sellers and we can provide something that they can’t and that is customer service. So we have street shops and you can walk in with a USB stick and we can show you what to fix and to tell you that your file is correct and the print is going to look good. Customer service is everything.”
“Getting into business you have to own your mistakes. Learning how to manage people is also huge and I would never ask someone to do something I wouldn’t. I like to deal with people respectfully,” said Webb. Competing with other businesses and being able to protect yourselves your market share is huge. Being able to market yourself and be your business will help.

“ I feel at this point my horizon is further and further ahead. Being able to map out the steps to get there and giving yourself time to get there and being able to accept the setbacks. I do think that longview is the biggest asset I can bring to the company,” says Webb.  Being ahead of the game is really what you want to do when starting your business. Being able to keep up and look to the future of what you really want to become as a company.
